Disciplines

TDC offers a variety of disciplines for the art of dance.

Ballet

As the foundation of technique for all dance forms, ballet allows students to develop discipline, body alignment, posture, core strength, coordination, and flexibility.

Our TDC instructors follow the internationally recognized Royal Academy of Dance syllabus (R.A.D.) and Progressive Ballet Technique syllabus to complement and enhance ballet strength and technique. The dancers will be given the opportunity to go through the examination process in the years to come. Pointe training is also offered once a suitable level of strength and ability is achieved.

Pre-Pointe

Pre-Pointe is a class separate from the regular ballet class. This allows students ample time to learn the proper strength and alignment necessary for pointe work. It also allows the teachers to assess the student’s readiness which will help reduce injury once in their shoes.

Our teachers use the Perfect Pointe System to assess dancers for:

  • $Basic Ballet Technique
  • $Foot & Ankle Strength
  • $Pointe Range
  • $Anatomical Structure of the Foot
  • $Turnout Range and Control
  • $Core Control
  • $Maturity & Physical Development
Once the dancer can correctly perform all of the tests, they should be strong enough to commence Pointe work under the guidance of a qualified teacher.

Pointe

Pointe is the part of classical ballet training, which requires the dancers to wear Pointe shoes. This allows them to dance on fully stretched, tips of the toes.

After at least a year of pre-pointe and with the approval of a TDC instructor after careful assessment, the dancer will now be able to commence Pointe work. Please note that there is also an age requirement to proceed to pointe.

Jazz

Jazz is a very energetic dance form that includes jumps, turns, kicks and floor work. Jazz takes into account tap, ballet, jazz music, and African-American rhythms and dance, all of which come from similar roots. Body coordination, core strength, ballet training and flexibility are key elements for success in this genre.

TDC offers ADAPT Jazz & Tap training. ADAPT stands for “Associated Dance Arts for Professional Teachers”. ADAPT teachers work professionally to maintain the highest standard of dance training excellence the country has to offer. These dance teachers are leaders in quality dance training. They teach the love of dance and movement not only to the elite student, but to the recreational dancer as well.

Tap

Tap is a technical dance that is performed wearing shoes fitted with metal taps. It is characterized by rhythmical movement while tapping the toes and heels.

TDC uses Al Gilbert Tap and ADAPT Tap syllabus hand in hand in our tap classes.

In our ADAPT Jazz & Tap training, ADAPT meaning “Associated Dance Arts for Professional Teachers”, our ADAPT teachers work professionally to maintain the highest standard of dance training excellence the country has to offer. These dance teachers are leaders in quality dance training. They teach the love of dance and movement not only to the elite student, but to the recreational dancer as well.

Acro

Acrobatic Dance, or acro as it is commonly referred to by dancers and dance professionals, is the beautiful fusion of classic dance technique and the precision and athleticism of acrobatic elements. Often defined by unique choreography, acro dancers seamlessly blend musicality, emotional expression, line and extension with acrobatic movements in a dance context.

For our dancers’ safety, TDC has 3 certified and experienced instructors that work with the Acrobatic Arts Syllabus.

Lyrical

Lyrical is a style of dance created by merging ballet and jazz dance techniques. Lyrical dancing is performed to music with lyrics to inspire movements to express strong emotions the dancer feels from the lyrics in the chosen song. Because lyrical focuses on the expression of strong emotion, the style concentrates more on individual approach and expressiveness than the precision of the dancer’s movements.

Contemporary

Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements.

Hip Hop

Hip Hop refers to street style dance which has devolved from hip hop culture, originating from New York, during the late 1960s. The style is typically associated with rap or R&B music, and can often be found in music videos of all types. Different styles of hip hop include popping and locking, old school, afro beat, breakdancing, street dance and funk.
